Does Converting Points to FreePlay Cost You Tier Progress?

Last reviewed: November 2026

No. Converting points to FreePlay does not reduce your tier status or your certificate progress. Your play creates two parallel balances at once: an earned progress total that only counts up, and a redeemable balance you can spend. Converting spends the second one and leaves the first untouched.

This trips up more cruise players than almost any other point question, and the confusion is understandable. The kiosk often shows one number, so it looks like spending it should move you backward.

Two balances, one act of play

Think of every dollar of coin-in as writing two entries in the ledger:

BalanceWhat it doesDoes redeeming reduce it?
Tier / certificate progressCounts your total earned play for the program yearNo
Redeemable point balanceThe currency you spend on FreePlay or certificatesYes

Wager $5,000 of slot coin-in in Club Royale and you have earned 1,000 points at the official $5 per point rate. Those 1,000 points count toward the tier thresholds, count toward the certificate ladder, and sit in your spendable balance. Convert 500 of them to FreePlay and your spendable balance drops to 500. Your earned progress is still 1,000.

The same logic applies on Carnival’s Players Club at $2 per point, on Celebrity’s Blue Chip Club at $5, and on Casinos At Sea at $5. This is not a per-line quirk, it is how the accounting works.

What that means for a tier run

Club Royale tiers sit at Prime 2,500, Signature 25,000 and Masters 100,000 points, on a program year running April 1 to March 31. If you are grinding toward Signature at 25,000 points, downloading FreePlay along the way does not push you back down the ladder. You still need 25,000 earned points, and each one you earn stays counted whether or not you spend it.

Celebrity’s ladder runs Pearl 1, Onyx 500, Amethyst 5,000, Sapphire 15,000, Sapphire Plus 75,000 and Ruby 150,000 on a year running August 1 to July 31. Norwegian’s Casinos At Sea runs Jade 0, Pearl 4,000, Sapphire 15,000, Ruby 35,000 and Elite 100,000 on an 18-month rolling point expiry. Same principle across all of them: redemption is not a debit against progress.

Two lines have no ladder to protect. Princess Players Advantage has no tier ladder at all, and MSC’s Signature Player Rewards publishes nothing about tiers. There is nothing to lose there because there is nothing published to lose.

The catch that actually costs you

There is a real cost, but it is not tier progress. It is that FreePlay wagers earn no points.

So converting 1,000 points to FreePlay and playing it through does not generate a fresh 1,000 points. The coin-in from FreePlay is invisible to the earn engine. You spent a balance and got entertainment plus whatever the FreePlay won, but no new progress. A cash session of the same size would have earned points.

That is the honest tradeoff. Redeeming does not cost you what you already earned. It just does not earn you anything new.

Expiry is the other thing to watch

Redeemable balances do expire, and the schedules differ sharply:

  • Celebrity Blue Chip Club Reward Points expire at the end of each sailing, so there is no reason to carry them off the ship
  • Norwegian runs an 18-month rolling point expiry
  • Princess “Drinks On Us” unlocks at 1,500 points on the current sailing only, with no carryover

When a balance is about to expire, converting it to FreePlay is strictly better than losing it, and it costs you no progress. That is the clean case for redeeming.

What is not published

No line publishes its points-to-FreePlay conversion rate, so you cannot compute the cents-per-point value of a conversion in advance. Ask at the desk on the ship you are sailing, and treat any rate quoted online as a report from one sailing, not policy. Also worth remembering that comps do not make you a winner: protecting progress is not the same thing as coming out ahead.
