FreePlay at Sea: What It Is and What It Earns

Last reviewed: September 2026

FreePlay is credit loaded to your player account that you wager instead of cash. You keep what it wins, but the credit itself is consumed, not withdrawn. At sea the critical rule is that FreePlay wagers earn no points, so a FreePlay session builds no tier or certificate progress.

FreePlay works the same mechanically at sea as it does on land: you download it at the machine, you play it through, and the winnings become real balance. Everything around it is different.

What lines actually publish about FreePlay

Very little, and the gaps are the story.

Royal Caribbean players commonly find roughly $2 in welcome slot FreePlay waiting when they card in on a new sailing. That figure is player-verified from reports, not something Royal Caribbean publishes, and we flag it as such rather than presenting it as policy. It is a courtesy amount, not a meaningful bankroll.

Celebrity’s program is the one place with a hard published number nearby: Blue Chip Club Reward Points expire at the end of each sailing, and you need 10,000 points minimum if you want to credit your onboard expense account instead of taking a certificate. That is a redemption floor, not a FreePlay rate.

The rule that matters most: FreePlay earns nothing

Wagers made with FreePlay do not generate points. This is standard across the industry and it holds at sea.

The practical consequence: if you convert 5,000 points to FreePlay and play it through, you have not earned 5,000 points back. Your point balance is spent and your new play generates nothing while the FreePlay is running. Coin-in from FreePlay is invisible to the earn engine.

This is separate from the good news, which is that converting points to FreePlay does not reduce tier or certificate progress. Those are parallel balances on the same play, and we cover the mechanics in detail elsewhere.

How to value FreePlay honestly

FreePlay is not worth face value. It is worth face value multiplied by the machine’s payback, because you must wager it and the house edge applies to that wager.

At the measured cruise slot band of roughly 83% to 91% payback, with our readings pooling near 88%:

  • $100 of FreePlay is worth about $83 to $91 in expected cash
  • $500 of FreePlay is worth about $415 to $455
  • The $2 welcome FreePlay is worth about $1.76

Play it through once and stop, and the expected value is close to that. Play the winnings back through repeatedly and the expected value drifts toward zero, because every additional wager is subject to the same edge. Cruise slots are unregulated on payback: ship casinos operate in international waters, outside any land jurisdiction’s minimum-payback and disclosure rules, and our measured readings found the same game title at 90.1% on one ship and 83.3% on another.

Practical handling

Download FreePlay on a sea day, since ship casinos generally must close in port. Play it at a bet size that finishes the balance in a reasonable number of spins rather than grinding minimum bets for hours. And treat what it wins as cash you are ahead, not as a fresh bankroll, since comps never turn a losing session into a winning one.

What is not known

No cruise line publishes a points-to-FreePlay conversion rate, an expiry schedule for FreePlay itself on most lines, or the payback of the machines you are told to play it on. If someone quotes you a firm cents-per-point FreePlay rate for a specific line, ask where it was published. Usually the answer is nowhere.
