How Three-Pot Slots Work (and Whether a Full Pot Matters)
Last reviewed: October 2026
A three-pot slot gives three bonus powers a chance to activate, individually or together. The useful questions are what activates each pot, what each power changes, and whether the visible collection affects future chances. A pot that looks nearly full is not enough information to answer any of them.
For a real example of combinable triggers, Aristocrat describes its Coin Trio games, Fortune Trails and Piggy Burst, as offering seven Hold & Spin variations from one, two, or three active triggers. Their enhancements include big prizes, multipliers, and an award-all feature. That establishes the combination idea, rather than a universal rule for every three-pot game. Aristocrat’s Coin Trio description.
Lanternfox Market is an original LearnTheOdds example with its own symbols, probabilities, and free-game powers. It illustrates three-pot combinations through an expanding wild reel, extra free games, and a line-win multiplier. Its rules and mathematics do not describe Coin Trio or another commercial machine.

The market has five reels, three visible rows, and 20 active paylines. Select a total practice bet of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, or $50. Each line receives one twentieth of that amount, so a $1 total bet means a $0.05 line bet.
Regular wins begin on the leftmost reel and follow a listed payline through three, four, or five matching symbols. Foxfire Wild substitutes for regular symbols and also has its own paytable. A line receives its highest eligible award once. Different winning lines add together, even when they share symbols.
The game draws all 15 visible cells independently from the weighted table below. The reels are a presentation of those cells; the three symbols in a column are not neighboring stops on a fixed strip.
Every symbol and its payment
The weights add to 95. A symbol’s chance in each ordinary cell is its weight divided by 95. For example, Moon Pear has a 15/95 chance, about 15.79%; Foxfire Wild has 3/95, about 3.16%.
Payments are multiples of the line bet, not the total bet. A dash means no line payment.
| Symbol | Weight out of 95 | 3 matching | 4 matching | 5 matching |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moon Pear | 15 | 7× | 20× | 65× |
| Cloud Bun | 14 | 7× | 20× | 65× |
| Ribbon Candy | 12 | 9× | 26× | 84× |
| Crescent Dumpling | 11 | 9× | 26× | 84× |
| Sugarplum Skewer | 9 | 11× | 33× | 102× |
| Festival Parasol | 8 | 15× | 42× | 140× |
| Lucky Star Coin | 6 | 19× | 56× | 186× |
| Paper Moon Lantern | 5 | 23× | 70× | 233× |
| Starfire Teapot | 4 | 33× | 93× | 326× |
| Lanternfox Vendor | 3 | 56× | 168× | 698× |
| Foxfire Wild | 3 | 65× | 186× | 930× |
| Festival Ticket Scatter | 2 | - | - | - |
| Wildfire Pot | 1 | - | - | - |
| Moonrise Pot | 1 | - | - | - |
| Starlight Pot | 1 | - | - | - |
At a $1 total bet, a line of three Moon Pears returns $0.05 × 7 = $0.35. Five Lanternfox Vendors return $0.05 × 698 = $34.90. A line with five Foxfire Wilds returns $46.50. Wilds do not become tickets or pots.
A return is the amount credited, not the profit. If your $1 paid spin returns only $0.35, the bank falls by $0.65. The stake was charged once; the table does not award it again separately.
What lights the three pots?
Every pot symbol landing on a paid spin receives an independent 1-in-12 ignition check. A successful check activates its matching power. Two or three different powers can activate on the same spin.
Any activation awards eight free games, with four extra at entry if Moonrise is active. These powers stay fixed throughout that feature:
- Wildfire: On every free game, one of the five reels is chosen uniformly and all three cells become wild.
- Moonrise: The starting award becomes 12 free games instead of eight.
- Starlight: Every free-game line award receives a 3× multiplier.
Three or more Festival Tickets anywhere on a paid board activate all three pots, even if no pot symbol successfully ignites. Tickets have no separate cash payment.
| Active combination | Starting free games | Powers during those games |
|---|---|---|
| Wildfire | 8 | One expanded wild reel |
| Moonrise | 12 | Ordinary line evaluation |
| Starlight | 8 | 3× line awards |
| Wildfire + Moonrise | 12 | One expanded wild reel |
| Wildfire + Starlight | 8 | Expanded wild reel and 3× line awards |
| Moonrise + Starlight | 12 | 3× line awards |
| All three | 12 | Expanded wild reel and 3× line awards |
There are seven combinations because each of three powers can be on or off: 2 × 2 × 2 = eight states, less the state with none active. Multiple successful checks for the same pot do not add extra copies of its power.
With Starlight, the $34.90 five-Vendor example becomes $104.70. The multiplier applies to the line award; it does not multiply the stake or the number of games.
Growing pots and extra games
Every matching pot symbol collected on a paid spin increases its visible growth, up to a display limit of 12. Growth never changes the ignition chance. A fresh pot and the largest pot use the same 1-in-12 check for each newly landed matching symbol. The display limit does not force an award.
After the feature finishes, activated pots reset their growth; unused pots keep theirs. Changing the bet preserves the display. A fresh visit or bank reset clears it. None of that collection is consulted when the game decides symbols, ignition, or payments.
During free games, pot symbols do not ignite or upgrade the awarded powers. Three or more tickets add four games, regardless of whether Moonrise is active. Five tickets still add four, not eight or twelve.
Wildfire’s transformation occurs before tickets are counted. If a drawn ticket lies on the selected wild reel, it is replaced and cannot help retrigger. Only the other 12 cells can retain tickets. The power improves line opportunities while also reducing the ticket retrigger probability.
Each free game first uses one remaining game, then adds any retrigger award. Starting with eight remaining and landing a retrigger leaves 8 - 1 + 4 = 11 remaining. The triggering bet stays locked; these games require no further wager.
Calculating the trigger chances
There are two random stages for a pot: landing the symbol, then igniting it. For a particular pot in one cell, that gives:
(1/95) × (1/12) = 1/1,140
If three matching pot symbols are already visible, their combined ignition chance is 1 - (11/12)^3, about 22.97%. It is not a guaranteed trigger, and three independent attempts are not simply added to make 25%.
Across all three pot types, a cell’s chance of a successful ignition is 3/1,140 = 1/380. The chance of at least one successful pot check in 15 cells is therefore:
1 - (379/380)^15 = about 3.8755%
Tickets supply a separate route. With a ticket chance of 2/95 per cell, the chance of at least three among 15 is about 0.35114%. To calculate it, add the probabilities for three, four, and every larger possible ticket count. For exactly k tickets, use:
C(15,k) × (2/95)^k × (93/95)^(15-k)
Here C(15,k) counts how many arrangements place k tickets in 15 cells. Multiplying symbol probabilities handles one arrangement; that count includes the others.
Simply adding the pot and ticket rates would count spins satisfying both twice. Tracking the ticket count and which pots have activated, then applying the ticket override, gives these rounded probabilities per paid spin:
| Feature outcome | Probability |
|---|---|
| Exactly Wildfire, exactly Moonrise, or exactly Starlight | 1.27231% each |
| Exactly either specified pair | 0.01576% each of the three pairs |
| All three powers | 0.35132% |
| Any feature | 4.21552% |
All three powers are more common than any particular pair because tickets supply the all-three shortcut. The overall rate is about one feature per 23.72 paid spins on average. It is not a countdown: an unsuccessful spin does not make the next one more likely to trigger.
From symbol chances to expected return
Expected value means a probability-weighted average, including losing outcomes. It does not describe what one player should expect to receive on their next spin.
First consider one payline. For each possible five-symbol sequence, multiply the five cell probabilities, find the highest eligible paytable award, and multiply that award by its sequence probability. Add those contributions. Repeating a symbol and using wild substitutions are handled by the same line rules used during play.
For the ordinary board, this gives about 0.35362 times the total bet in line awards per spin. There are 20 lines, each staked at one twentieth of the total, so their expected awards sum to that figure. Shared cells make lines correlated, but do not prevent adding their expectations.
For Wildfire, repeat the calculation with each of the five reel positions forced wild, then average those five results. Its mean line return is about 1.84441 times the triggering bet per free game, before Starlight. For Starlight, multiply the applicable mean by three.
Retriggers also have value. Without Wildfire, a free game’s retrigger probability is about 0.35114%. With Wildfire it is about 0.17799%, calculated from 12 surviving ticket positions. If q is that probability and n games were awarded initially:
expected games played = n / (1 - 4q)
Each game contributes itself and, with probability q, creates four further games that follow the same rule. Thus eight starting games average about 8.114 without Wildfire or 8.057 with it. Moonrise’s 12 become about 12.171 or 12.086 respectively.
For each of the seven combinations, multiply its expected game count by its applicable mean line return. Then weight that feature value by the combination’s paid-spin probability. For example, all three powers average about 12.086 × 1.84441 × 3 = 66.87 triggering bets within the feature. Some individual features pay much less; a few pay much more.
Adding all seven weighted contributions produces about 60.09% of a paid bet in expected feature return. Add the ordinary line contribution of about 35.36% to obtain an analytical model return of approximately 95.45%. This calculation describes the stated independent weighted model, not a certified commercial RTP.
What the simulation does and does not show
The separate October 2026 run completed every bonus attached to 2,000,000 paid spins. Its observed return was about 94.93%, with a reported approximate 95% confidence interval of 94.21% to 95.65%. Its base and free-game contributions were about 35.35% and 59.58% of total stakes. Sampling variation explains why the observed result differs from the probability calculation.
The largest complete paid-round return observed was 450.75× the bet. That is a sample record, not the game’s maximum. A single all-wild paid board can return 930×; with Starlight an all-wild free game can return 2,790×. Repeated ticket retriggers have no programmed count cap, so there is no finite mathematical ceiling on a complete feature’s accumulated return in this model.
Common questions
Is a nearly full pot better than a small pot?
No. Lanternfox’s growth is visual collection only. It stores no improved odds or guaranteed future award. Increasing your bet because a pot looks full changes the amounts at stake, not its trigger probability.
Can a pot bonus return nothing?
Yes. The feature guarantees games and the awarded powers, not a minimum cash-equivalent return. Even an expanded wild reel needs suitable symbols elsewhere to create a left-to-right win.
Does Moonrise add four games on every retrigger?
Moonrise adds four at entry. Any qualifying ticket retrigger adds four independently of that power. Powers remain as awarded when the feature began.
Do paid-spin wins count in the feature total?
The triggering spin’s line wins are credited before the feature begins. The feature total records the later free-game awards. To find the complete paid-round return, add both, then subtract the original wager if you want net profit or loss.
Can changing speed or stakes improve the percentages?
Quick mode changes animation timing. A larger bet scales awards and potential losses proportionally. Neither changes the symbol weights, pot checks, or expected return percentage.
