How to Read a Slot Paytable: What Every Section Actually Tells You

The paytable is the only window a slot machine gives you into its math. Most players skip it. Players who read it understand what they’re actually playing — and what they’re giving up.
Where to find the paytable
On video slots (online or physical), look for an “i,” ”?” button, or “Paytable” tab in the game interface. On sweepstakes casino slots, it’s usually in the top corner of the game screen or accessible from a menu icon. It’s always there — take 30 seconds to open it before spinning.
Section 1: Symbol values
The core of the paytable shows how much each symbol pays per combination, usually expressed as a multiplier of your bet or a fixed credit amount.
How to read it:
- “5× bet” means if you wagered $1 and hit that combo, you win $5.
- Values are usually listed highest-to-lowest (premium symbols → low symbols).
- Note whether payouts are for 3, 4, or 5 matching symbols — in most games a 5-of-a-kind pays 3–5× more than a 3-of-a-kind.
What this tells you about the game: If the highest symbol pays 500× and the lowest pays 5×, the game has wide symbol-value spread — meaning most wins will feel small, with rare big hits driving the RTP. If the spread is tight (top pays 50×, bottom pays 10×), the game will feel more consistent.
Section 2: Wild symbols
The paytable describes what the wild does — and wilds are not all equal.

Scatters pay regardless of payline position — they just need to appear on the reels in any location. The paytable tells you:
- How many scatters trigger the bonus (usually 3+)
- What the bonus is (free spins, bonus round, multiplier)
- Whether scatters pay even outside the bonus (some do, some don’t)
Scatter pays are often expressed as a multiplier of your total bet, not your line bet — which makes them more valuable than the number first suggests.
Section 4: Bonus features
This section covers free spins, pick-me bonus rounds, and any special mechanics. Read for:
- How free spins are triggered and how many you get
- What changes during free spins (multipliers, extra wilds, different reel layouts)
- Whether free spins can retrigger and how many times
- Whether there’s a jackpot and how it’s won
Free spins rounds are where most of a slot’s RTP is concentrated in high-variance games. A game that looks boring in base play might have a spectacular free spins round that drives the entire return.
Section 5: RTP — if it’s listed
Some slots publish RTP in the paytable or help section; others don’t. In regulated jurisdictions (UK, Malta, NJ, MI), casinos are often required to publish RTP. On sweepstakes casino slots, RTP is more commonly disclosed.
What to look for:
- A 94–96% RTP is standard for online slots.
- Below 92% is below-average; above 97% is very player-favorable.
- Some games list two RTPs (base game + jackpot contribution) — the stated RTP usually includes jackpot contribution, which you statistically may never hit.
If RTP is not listed in the paytable, look in the game’s help documentation, the operator’s website, or third-party databases like Wizard of Odds.
What the paytable won’t tell you
Reel weights — the paytable shows what each symbol pays but not how often it appears. A top symbol might only appear once per 50 stops on a virtual reel.
Hit frequency — how often any spin produces a payout. This isn’t published.
Exact variance — you can infer high variance (few high-paying symbols, large jackpot, small base-game wins) from reading the paytable carefully, but you can’t calculate it precisely.
The bottom line: reading the paytable before you play takes under a minute. It tells you what the premium symbols pay, how the bonus triggers, what the wild does, and (sometimes) the RTP. That’s more information than most players ever act on.
