Cruise Casino Earn Rates Compared Across Eight Lines

Last reviewed: September 2026

Converted to dollars of slot coin-in, cruise casino earn rates split into two clear groups. Carnival, Holland America and Princess award a point per $2 cycled. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian and Virgin Voyages require $5. MSC publishes no rate at all. The $2 lines earn points 2.5 times faster per dollar.

Why the comparison has to be in dollars

A point is not a unit. It is whatever each cruise line decides it is.

Carnival’s point costs $2 of coin-in. Royal Caribbean’s costs $5. Comparing 10,000 Carnival points to 10,000 Club Royale points as if they were the same quantity is comparing $20,000 of play to $50,000 of play. That is a two-and-a-half-fold error, and it is the single most common mistake in cruise casino discussion.

Every honest comparison starts by converting to coin-in. Our piece on why cruise points are not a common currency goes deeper on how that trap plays out in practice.

Two of the eight rates are not confirmed by the cruise line. Princess’s comes from multiple first-hand player reports, most recently 17 November 2025, and Princess has already changed the rate once without announcing it. Virgin’s benefits grid is published as an image we could not read, so the $5 and $10 figures are secondary too.

Carnival has the richest slot rate at sea

Among lines that publish officially, Carnival’s $2 per point on slots is the best rate confirmed by the operator, tied with Holland America.

What that buys differs sharply, though. Carnival’s Gold tier sits at 10,000 points, which is $20,000 of coin-in. Norwegian’s Pearl tier sits at 4,000 points, which is also $20,000 of coin-in at $5 per point. Same money, different-looking numbers, roughly comparable position in each ladder.

So a fast earn rate is not automatically a better program. It only helps if the thresholds and rewards are scaled proportionally, and each line sets those independently.

Video poker is penalized everywhere, by different amounts

No line treats video poker like slots, because the house edge on a good video poker paytable is a fraction of the slot edge. The penalty ranges from 2x to 3x.

LineSlot rateVP ratePenalty
Royal Caribbean$5$153.0x
Celebrity$5$153.0x
Carnival$2$52.5x
Holland America$2$52.5x
Princess$2$52.5x
Norwegian$5$102.0x
Virgin Voyages$5$102.0x

Celebrity’s video poker rate moved from $10 to $15 per point in late July 2026, doubling down on the penalty. Norwegian and Virgin are the most generous to video poker players at 2x.

What a fast earn rate does not change

Earning points 2.5 times faster does not improve the machine. Measured cruise slot RTP runs 83% to 91% across four readings, against a Nevada statewide slot hold of 7.1% in 2025, or about 93% back. Cruise slots keep more of your money than land slots do, on every line in this table.

That means the earn rate is a rebate percentage on a worse base game. Cycling $20,000 on a cruise slot at 87% RTP implies about $2,600 in expected losses. No point total on any of these eight programs is worth $2,600.

The measured cruise slot RTP figures are worth reading before you optimize for earn rate, because the base game matters far more than the rebate.

Tables earn differently and nobody publishes a formula

Every line rates table play by game type, average bet and time played. Not one publishes the formula, so your table earn rate is a pit judgment recorded at the discretion of the floor. That is why slot comparison is possible and table comparison is not.

The practical takeaway

The $2 group earns faster per dollar, and Carnival and Holland America are the two where that rate is officially confirmed. But rate is only one input. Tier thresholds, certificate ladders and expiry rules vary more than the earn rates do.
