Pushes in Blackjack: How Ties Work and How Often They Happen

Your 19 meets the dealer’s 19: push. Bet slides back, hand never happened. Ties are blackjack’s non-event, but they occur on nearly one hand in eleven, they’re baked into every strategy number, and a few popular variants quietly rewrite them in the house’s favor.

The standard rules

• Equal totals push: your bet is returned, no win, no loss.
• Blackjack vs. blackjack pushes: your natural against the dealer’s natural is a tie, not a win.
• A dealer blackjack beats your regular 21: 21-in-three-cards loses to a natural; that asymmetry surprises new players more than any other tie rule.
• Busting is never a push: if you bust first, the dealer busting afterward doesn’t rescue you. (That “both bust” moment is the house’s core mechanical edge.)

How often pushes happen

Under standard rules, roughly 8 to 9% of resolved hands push, once or twice per typical shoe stint. Strategy charts already account for them; there’s nothing to adjust. But pushes do slow the effective pace: about 91% of your hands actually move money, which slightly stretches how long a bankroll lasts compared to the raw hands-per-hour rate.

The variant traps

Tie handling is a favorite hiding place for rule changes:

• “Push 22” games (Spanish 21 relatives, some side-bet variants): when the dealer busts with exactly 22, all standing player hands push instead of winning. That single line claws back a huge chunk of the dealer-bust probability and is worth well over a percent to the house, the compensating liberal rules rarely pay it all back.
• Tie-win side bets (“Push Your Luck”-style) sell you insurance against pushes at side-bet prices, the usual multi-percent tax on a non-problem.
