Plan the turn and river

THE IDEA

Before betting the flop, think about what you will do on useful, neutral, and bad turn cards. On the river there are no more cards to come, so a bet is usually for calls from worse hands or folds from better ones. A missed draw does not automatically become a good bluff.

AT THE TABLE

If a third heart arrives on the turn, both your value target and your opponent's continuing range may change. Reassess rather than repeating the flop bet by habit.

Build a plan that can change

Before betting the flop, sort turn cards into three groups: cards that improve you, cards that mostly leave the picture unchanged, and cards that improve the opponent's plausible draws. This is a plan, not a prediction. When the turn arrives, update the opponent's range using both the new card and the action on the flop. Then decide again whether your bet is for value, a bluff, or neither.

Suppose you have a spade draw on A♦7♠2♠. A spade turn can complete your flush, but may also make an opponent cautious. A blank turn leaves you drawing with one card to come, so a call must be priced for that one card rather than for two. If you check and the opponent checks back, their range may shift toward hands comfortable taking a free card, though traps remain possible.

On the river, the cards are final. A missed draw has little or no chance to improve at showdown. A river bet with that hand needs better hands to fold. If you act last and check, the hand goes to showdown; there is no next card or later betting round. If you bet, identify a better hand the opponent could hold and why that player might release it.

Try it at the table

In the prepared missed-draw river, list two pairs Maya could hold. Would each pair fold to a believable bet? If you cannot answer, checking is a defensible choice.

WATCH FOR THIS

Do not carry a flop plan unchanged through a card that changes the board's strongest possible hands.

MAKE THE CALL

Why is river equity different from flop equity?
