Draws, protection, and price

THE IDEA

A draw has cards that can improve it. A protection bet makes opponents pay to continue with hands that might outdraw you. Neither concept overrides price: a draw can be worth calling if the pot is large enough, and a made hand can be too weak to bet into several opponents.

AT THE TABLE

You hold a pair while a flush draw is possible. A bet can charge the draw, but an opponent may also already have two pair or better.

Make draws pay without pretending they disappear

A draw is an unfinished hand with cards that could improve it. A protection bet asks an opponent to pay for the chance to catch one of those cards. It does not remove the draw from the deck and cannot guarantee that your current best hand stays best. When sizing a bet, think about the price you give a draw and the worse made hands you still want to call.

Suppose you hold A♠Q♦ on A♦9♥5♥. You have top pair with a strong kicker, but hearts and some straight draws are possible. Betting can get value from weaker aces and charge draws. If a heart arrives on the turn, do not assume the flush completed every time, but reconsider which hands called the flop and what they now beat. If a blank card arrives, you may still face sets or two pair.

When you are the one drawing, reverse the question. Count clean outs, calculate the immediate call price, and consider whether future bets will cost more. A flush draw may have enough equity to call a small bet and too little to call a large one. The decision depends on price and range, not the excitement of seeing a possible flush.

Try it at the table

At the trainer table, choose one bet that charges a draw and one turn card that makes you reassess. Explain which worse hands still call your chosen size.

WATCH FOR THIS

Do not count every possible improving card as a winning out. Some cards help your opponent more.

MAKE THE CALL

Why bet a likely best pair when draws are possible?
