Why check-raise?

THE IDEA

A check-raise starts with a check, then raises after an opponent bets on the same street. It can build a pot with a strong hand or pressure a bettor with a draw or carefully chosen bluff. The line is strongest when you can explain what your checking range contains.

AT THE TABLE

From the big blind, you check a flop that favors your range, the preflop raiser bets, and you raise with a strong two pair.

A check-raise has two decisions in it

To check-raise, you must first check while you could have bet. An opponent then bets on the same street, and you raise that bet. This means you acted before the bettor. A player acting last on the river cannot check and then raise a bet on that street, because nobody remains to act behind the check. Position and action order are part of the play, not just the size of the final raise.

For value, a check-raise builds a larger pot when a strong hand can be called by worse. In the prepared big-blind spot, you check two pair, Maya bets, and you can raise. Before doing so, name the worse hands that could continue: a strong one-pair hand or a draw may qualify, depending on the board and player. If only better hands call, the raise's value case is weaker.

A check-raise can also be a bluff or semi-bluff. A strong draw may win if the bettor folds now and may improve when called. But checking with the intention to raise is risky if the opponent checks back, because the betting round ends without the extra value or pressure you expected. Ask whether the opponent is likely to bet and whether your range credibly includes the strong hands you represent.

Try it at the table

Before acting in the prepared spot, predict Maya's bet. After it arrives, name one worse hand that might call your raise and one hand that could re-raise.

WATCH FOR THIS

A check-raise is not automatically strength. Skilled opponents can use it with draws and bluffs too.
