Match the Dealer in Spanish 21: The Exact Odds
Last reviewed: July 2026
Match the Dealer is Spanish 21’s house side bet: if either of your first two cards matches the dealer’s upcard by rank, you’re paid — more if the suit matches too. Unusually for a side bet, the odds are fully computable in closed form. We did, and the answer is 3.06%: one of the better-priced side bets in the casino, and still seven times the main game.
How it pays
Each of your two cards is checked against the dealer’s upcard independently, and matching cards add:
| Your cards vs the upcard (6 decks) | Probability | Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Two suited matches | 0.024% | 18 to 1 |
| One suited + one unsuited match | 0.22% | 13 to 1 |
| Two unsuited matches | 0.37% | 8 to 1 |
| One suited match | 3.22% | 9 to 1 |
| One unsuited match | 11.58% | 4 to 1 |
| No match | 84.59% | loses |
Total: some match lands about 15.4% of hands, and the exact house edge works out to 3.06%. (Eight-deck tables switch to a 3/12/24 paytable — edge 2.99%.) These aren’t simulations — every probability is direct combinatorics over the Spanish shoe, and they match the published figures to six decimals.
Why the Spanish deck matters here
A subtle point: Match the Dealer exists in regular blackjack too, but the Spanish deck changes the counting. With the 10-spots gone, each rank you hold is a slightly larger share of a 48-card deck — match frequencies run a touch higher than they would in a full-deck game, and the paytables are tuned around exactly that. It’s a neat example of how every number in a casino is engineered against its specific deck.
Should you play it?
By our usual side-bet standards, Match the Dealer is almost reasonable:
| Side bet | House edge |
|---|---|
| Match the Dealer (6 decks) | 3.06% |
| 21+3 (blackjack) | ~3.2% |
| Aces Up (Four Card Poker) | 3.89% |
| Pair Plus (Three Card Poker) | 7.28% |
| Baccarat Pairs | 10.36% |
Still: the Spanish 21 main game costs 0.40%. A dollar on Match the Dealer costs seven-plus times a dollar on the hand itself. If you enjoy the sweat, it’s one of the cheaper sweats on the menu — just never mistake it for part of the strategy.
