Let It Ride requires three bets on the layout but risks an average of just 1.22 of them per hand, cheap by that measure. What the averages hide is the rhythm: 76.1% of hands pay nothing, and sessions live or die on how you’ve sized for the droughts between hits.
The shape of a session
Optimal play pulls bets back aggressively, so most hands resolve as a single lost unit. The wins that matter cluster in the 16.25% of hands making tens-or-better (1:1 on whatever rode) and the 9% making two pair or better (2:1 up to 1000:1, often with two or three bets riding). Translated to the chair:
- Losing 7 of 10 hands is the normal, healthy state of the game.
- Drought math: a 10-hand payless streak has a 6.5% chance at any moment; every long session contains several.
- The comebacks are lumpy; a full house with three bets riding returns 33 units at once and erases half an hour of drip.
Sizing the buy-in
Because the table demands three units up front (even though you usually reclaim two), think in base bets:
- Post 3 units per hand, expect ~1.22 to stay in action. A $5 base bet means $15 on the felt each deal.
- Buy in with 30 to 40 base bets ($150 to $200 at $5): enough to ride out consecutive droughts without touching the rebuy question mid-tilt.
- Expected cost is gentle: at ~40 hands/hour, a $5 base runs about $8.60/hour (40 × $5 × 1.22 × 2.86% element of risk… conservatively, call it under $10/hour). The variance, not the price, is what ends sessions early.
The discipline notes
- Never “let one ride for luck” on a hand the strategy pulls; every hunch-ride is a fresh negative-EV unit, and it’s precisely the drought hands that tempt you.
- Don’t shrink correct rides late in a losing session, pulling a paying hand’s bets isn’t even possible (bet 3 always rides), but under-riding three-to-royal spots gives away the game’s few premium EV moments.
