Blackjack Switch Strategy: When to Break Up a Good Hand

Once your four cards are down, Blackjack Switch asks you exactly one question no other blackjack game asks: keep these two hands, or trade their second cards? Get that right and the rest is ordinary blackjack. Our simulator, playing the exact expected value of both arrangements, chooses to switch on about 33.7% of rounds, so roughly one hand in three is a decision, not a formality.
The decision, stated precisely
You hold two hands. Each has a first card and a second card. You may swap the two second cards, and that is the only rearrangement on offer. Not the first cards, not one card, not twice.
So there are always exactly two possible worlds, and the correct play is simply whichever has the higher expected value against the dealer’s upcard. That is a computation, not a judgement call, which is why the Play tab shows you the solver’s value for both arrangements on every hand rather than just telling you the answer.
The habit that costs the most
Here is the hand that separates players who understand the game from players who don’t.
You’re dealt 10-10 and 6-6. One beautiful 20, one hopeless 12. Switching gives you 10-6 and 10-6: two 16s. Two of the worst hands in blackjack.
Most players won’t do it. It feels like vandalism: you’re demolishing a made 20 to build two stiffs.
But look at what you actually own in each case. Keeping the hands, you have one strong hand and one hand that’s close to dead weight. Switching, you have two hands that are bad but live, both able to improve, both able to catch a dealer 22 push.
Whether the switch is right depends on the upcard, and that’s the point: it is a real question with a real answer, and refusing to consider it because 20 looks pretty is how the game gets expensive. Two mediocre hands frequently beat one great hand plus one corpse, because you are paid on two bets, not one.
Why the upcard changes everything
The same four cards can switch against a 6 and stand pat against a 10. Three forces are pulling:
- Against a weak upcard (2 through 6) the dealer is likely to break. Hands that merely survive are valuable, so arrangements that produce two live hands gain. Doubling chances are also worth more here, so switching to create a 10 or 11 is often right.
- Against a strong upcard (9, 10, ace) you need made hands, not survivors. Keeping one genuinely strong hand can beat spreading your value thin.
- Push 22 quietly favours survival everywhere. Because a dealer 22 rescues any hand you haven’t busted, arrangements that keep both hands alive are worth marginally more here than the same arrangement would be at a normal blackjack table.
Three rules worth internalising
If you take nothing else to the table:
- Never switch a natural away. An ace-ten dealt to you is the one hand that beats a dealer 22, and switching destroys that status permanently. A 21 built by switching is only 21 points.
- Don’t chase a switched 21. Since it isn’t a natural, it pays the same even money as any other win and loses to a dealer 22 like any other 21. Arranging your cards to manufacture one is often the worse of the two worlds.
- Break up 20 more often than feels right. Not always. But if your instinct is “never,” your instinct is costing you money.
The point count, and what it’s worth
At a real table you can’t run an EV calculation in your head, so players use Cindy Liu’s point count: score each of the two arrangements by a fixed rule and keep the higher score.
The published cost of using it instead of perfect play is about 0.08% for the advanced version and 0.17% for the simplified one. Both are small. To put that in perspective, the whole game only costs 0.58% under optimal play, so even the simpler method leaves you at roughly 0.75%, still cheaper than a 6:5 blackjack table at about 1.4%.
That’s the useful conclusion: the method you use is not where your money goes. Playing a decent approximation thoughtfully beats agonising over the perfect one. What actually costs you is refusing to break up good hands, chasing switched 21s, and ignoring the upcard.
Practise it where mistakes are free
Reading about breaking up a 20 and doing it are different things.
