The $5 Spot Is a Trap: Why Big Six Odds Aren't in Order

Almost every casino game prices its bets in a sensible order: the longer the odds, the worse the deal, steadily and predictably. The Big Six wheel doesn’t. Its $10 spot costs 18.52% while its $5 spot costs 22.22%, the longer shot is the better bet, and the reason tells you something useful about how paytables get written.

The $5 spot is tied for the worst bet on the wheel with the $20 spot, despite paying a quarter as much. And it sits in the middle of the layout, where nothing about it looks alarming.
Why it happens
Every one of these spots would be a fair bet if it paid its true odds. Work those out from the pocket counts:

Now look at the $5 row. Its true odds are 6.71:1 and it pays 5:1. That’s a shortfall of 1.71 units against a payout of 5, which is proportionally the deepest cut on the wheel.
The $10 spot’s true odds are 12.5:1 and it pays 10:1. A bigger absolute shortfall: 2.5 units, but against a much bigger payout, so proportionally it stings less.
That’s the whole mechanism. The house edge isn’t the size of the shortfall, it’s the shortfall relative to what the bet pays. The wheel’s designers chose round, memorable payouts matching the bill denominations (1, 2, 5, 10, 20) and then the pocket counts had to be whatever they had to be. Nobody was checking that the resulting edges came out in a tidy sequence, and they didn’t.
The $5 spot is designed to look reasonable
Here’s why this matters practically rather than just as arithmetic trivia.
The $1 spot pays even money and hits nearly half the time, which feels safe and boring. The $20 spot is obviously a long shot. The $5 spot occupies the psychological middle (a payout that sounds respectable, odds of about 1 in 8 that don’t feel hopeless) and that middle is precisely where the wheel takes the most.
If you sat down determined to find the sensible compromise bet on a money wheel, you would very likely choose the $5 spot, and you would have chosen the worst-value denomination on the layout.
What this generalises to
Whenever a game offers a ladder of bets on the same event, check each rung separately. Don’t assume the edges are ordered, because they’re usually a byproduct of choosing round payout numbers rather than the result of anyone designing a consistent price curve.
