Baccarat's Third Card Rules: The Tableau That Plays Itself

Last reviewed: October 2026

Baccarat is the only major table game with zero player decisions after the bet. Whether either hand draws a third card is dictated by a fixed rulebook called the tableau, and understanding it answers the game’s most asked question: why does the banker bet win more often?

The player hand’s rule (simple)

Both hands start with two cards, scored by baccarat’s last-digit arithmetic. If either hand totals 8 or 9, it is a “natural” and everything stops. Otherwise the player hand acts first by one rule:

  • Player total 0 to 5: draw a third card.
  • Player total 6 or 7: stand.

That is the entire player tableau.

The banker hand’s rule (the clever part)

If the player stood, the banker follows the same simple rule (draw on 0 to 5, stand on 6 or 7). But when the player drew, the banker’s action depends on what card the player drew, not just the banker’s own total:

Banker totalBanker draws when player’s third card is…
0, 1, 2Always draws
3Anything except 8
42 through 7
54 through 7
66 or 7
7Never draws

Read the pattern: the banker draws boldly when the player’s third card was probably helpful to the player, and stays conservative when that card likely wrecked the player’s hand. The banker is, by rule, always reacting with more information than the player had.

Why this creates the banker edge

Acting last with knowledge of the opponent’s draw is a structural advantage, the same one a poker player has acting in position. Over the full shoe it makes the banker hand win about 45.9% of hands versus 44.6% for the player (the rest tie). The famous 5% commission on banker wins exists precisely to claw that advantage back; even after paying it, banker remains the better bet at 1.06% versus 1.24%.

What the tableau means for you

Three practical takeaways:

  1. There is no skill to find here. The tableau removes every decision, which is exactly why baccarat’s house edge is low and stable. You cannot play it wrong; you can only bet it wrong.
  2. Ignore anyone narrating “the player should have stood.” Nobody should have anything. The rules did what they always do.
  3. The mystery is marketing. Casinos rarely explain the tableau because inscrutability is part of baccarat’s mystique. It is not mysterious; it is a lookup table.

Deal free hands with the tableau above open next to you, and within a shoe you will predict every draw before it happens.
