Baccarat for Beginners: The Easiest Game in the Casino

Baccarat has a reputation for being a high-roller game played behind velvet ropes. Strip away the atmosphere and you find one of the mechanically simplest games in any casino. Here is the complete gameplay loop:
- You bet on Player, Banker, or Tie.
- Two cards go to the Player hand, two to the Banker hand.
- A fixed set of drawing rules decides whether either hand takes a third card.
- The hand closest to 9 wins.
- You collect or lose your bet.
That is the entire game. You make no decisions after step one — no strategy to memorize, no mid-hand choices, no skill component at all. The draw rules run automatically, identically, every time.
Card Values

The Tie carries roughly 14 times the edge of Banker. That is not an exaggeration — at 8:1, ties simply are not paid at a rate that reflects how often they happen.
The Draw Rules in Plain English
You never need to memorize these — the dealer follows them automatically — but they explain why Banker wins slightly more often. Player draws a third card on totals 0–5 and stands on 6–7; a natural 8 or 9 for either side ends the hand immediately. Banker stands on 7–9, always draws on 0–2, and on 3–6 draws or stands depending on what the Player’s third card was.
That last clause is the whole game: Banker acts with information about Player’s draw, which makes its rules structurally more favorable. Across many hands, Banker wins about 45.9% of the time, Player about 44.6%, and ties about 9.5%.

What Beginners Get Wrong
Betting the Tie. An 8:1 payout sounds appealing, but ties happen about 9.5% of the time and 8:1 only breaks even above 11.1%. The gap between those numbers is where the 14.36% edge lives.
Reading the roads. Baccarat tables display scoreboards of past results precisely because casinos know players find patterns in random data and bet on them. Each hand is independent. The patterns are decoration.
