How to play Blackjack Switch

You play two hands instead of one, and you are allowed to swap their second cards. That is a real edge, and no ordinary blackjack table will ever offer it. The house takes it back through three rule changes printed in small type, and if you only notice the first one you will badly misjudge what you are playing.

How a round runs

  1. Post two equal bets. Not optional, and not one bet split in half. If you normally play $25 a hand, this game costs $50 a round.
  2. You get two hands, all four cards face up. The dealer takes an upcard and peeks for blackjack on an ace or a ten.
  3. Switch, or don't. You may swap the second card of each hand with the other. Once, and only the second cards. This is the decision the whole game is built around.
  4. Play both hands the way you would at any blackjack table: hit, stand, double on anything, double after split, resplit to four hands. No surrender.
  5. The dealer draws and hits soft 17, then both hands settle against the final total.

The three rules that pay for the switch

Each one is a real cost, and they are listed here in the order players actually notice them, which is the reverse of the order that matters.

  1. Blackjacks pay even money. Everyone spots this. A natural returns your stake instead of the 3:2 you are used to.
  2. A switched 21 is just 21. If you build an ace-ten by swapping, it is a good hand and it is not a blackjack. It loses to a dealer natural and does not beat a dealer 22.
  3. Push 22. This is the expensive one. If the dealer finishes on a hard 22, every player hand that hasn't busted pushes rather than winning.

Making the switch decision

The exact answer is to compute the expected value of both arrangements and take the better one, which is what the simulator on this site does. At a table you need something you can do in your head, and the standard tool is Cindy Liu's point count: score each arrangement, keep the higher one. The published cost of using it instead of perfect play is about 0.08% for the advanced version and 0.17% for the simplified one.

Both are cheap enough that the method is not where your money goes. Three habits cost far more than either:

  • Refusing to break up a good hand. Turning 20 and 12 into 15 and 17 looks like vandalism and is frequently correct. Two mediocre hands beat one great hand and one hopeless one.
  • Chasing a switched 21. It pays even money like everything else. Arranging your cards to make one is often worse than the alternative, because it is not a natural and does not beat a dealer 22.
  • Ignoring the upcard. The right switch against a dealer 6 is regularly the wrong switch against a dealer 10. Doubling opportunities are worth more when the dealer is weak.

Those first three are the price of the fourth. Push 22 is the heaviest of them: the dealer reaches exactly 22 on roughly 7.4% of resolved rounds, and every one of those is a hand you would have won outright at a normal table.

A pair alone shows up on 35.2% of deals, which is why this bet feels like it pays constantly. It still costs 2.55%, because a pair only returns your stake, and the 61.3% of deals with nothing take it away.

How to decide the switch

The exact answer compares the expected value of both arrangements, which is what this simulator does. Humans use a published shortcut instead: Cindy Liu's point count: score each way of arranging the four cards and take the higher. The source publishes two versions: the advanced count costs about 0.08% against perfect play and the simpler one about 0.17%: a fair price either way for something you can do at the table.

Super Match figures are ours; an exact closed-form enumeration of all 387,278,970 four-card combinations from a six-deck shoe, which reproduces the published probabilities exactly. The base-game house edge, the Liu method's cost, and the Super Match paytable are published figures (Wizard of Odds); our Monte Carlo reproduces the base edge within statistical tolerance. The math layer was independently reviewed before publication.

Super Match: it pays constantly and still costs 2.55%

Super Match resolves on your four starting cards before any switching. A pair pays 1:1, three of a kind 5:1, two pair 8:1, four of a kind 40:1. You will hit something on roughly 39% of deals, which is exactly why the bet feels generous.

It is not. A pair alone arrives 35.2% of the time and merely returns your stake, while the 61.3% of deals with nothing takes it. The result is a 2.55% house edge, over four times the base game, on the same four cards you were already being dealt.
